The Last Page
A section called “The Last Page” (literally the last page of the newsletter) gave readers a chance to get to know CBE staff and faculty on a more personal level. We enjoyed revisiting the following light-hearted comments from faculty members who continue to distinguish the College and university with their professional activities:
Book Recommendations
Donna Wiley (Management & Finance) recommends The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, an Afghan doctor who immigrated and lives in Fremont. Coincidentally, this book was selected for discussion at the 2006 Freshman Convocation.
Jagdish Agrawal (Marketing and Entrepreneurship) suggests Row 22, Seats A & B by Frederick Waterman. This book is a collection of 17 stories - each with a very clever twist.
Asha Rao (Management) recommends Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama, Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson and David O Relin and Run by Ann Patchett.
Thanksgiving wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without…
Turkey because the tryptophan gets you through Christmas - Micah Frankel
A thankful heart because it is the core of the season - Joanna Lee (Dept of Marketing and Entrepreneurship)
Favorite Vacation Spots
Montreal, Canada - for its architecture, cultural landscape, and dining. Their bagels and smoked meats are among the finest I’ve had. I visited Montreal over the Christmas break one year and want to go back again - Sweety Law (Marketing and Entrepreneurship)
Favorite Restaurant for a Special Occasion
If it’s a special occasion for the kids, they choose the place and it’s always Elephant Bar. If it’s a special occasion for the adults, the kids still get to choose! - Chinglih Jan (Accounting & Finance)
We usually go to the Olive Garden. It has a nice ambiance and a good choice of food. Everyone in the family finds a favorite entree there. For the last very special occasion, we went to Menara Moroccan Restaurant in San Jose because we wanted to try a different type of food, ambiance, and cultural setup. And we wanted something with entertainment. - Vish Hegde (Management)
Worst Job I Ever Had
For me it is a toss up between hot tar roofing in the winter in Canada or working alone 100 feet in the air on scaffolding without a safety harness in near total darkness inside an empty unlit water tower. These two easily beat out breaking up sidewalks with a sledge hammer, forest fire fighting, professional baking, tree planting, delivering phone books, bartending, running a youth hostel, moving cement in a wheelbarrow, floor sweeping etc - Glen Taylor (Dept. of Management)
The worst job I ever had was at Taco Bell. Either you’re in the back slaving over a hot stove, or you’re up front at the cash register where customers say 1 word every 5 seconds when placing their orders because they automatically assume you’re dumb, or you’re outside sweeping trash off the parking lot while wearing a polyester uniform in sweltering heat - Jed DeVaro (Dept of Economics)
