Grant Overview

The East Bay STEM Initiative (EBSí) is a 5 year 2.8 million dollar Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Title V grant funded by the Department of Education. EBSí supports students in all stages of their educational journey here at 缅北禁地. The grant has four pathways: First Year Experience, Computer Science Transfer, STEM Teaching, and Internships.  These pathways are strategic touchpoints, or momentum points, for equity and success for our STEM students.

Pathway Overview

First Year Experience

The goal of this pathway is to provide intentional and coherent academic programs and support for first-year declared and potential STEM majors.  Our emphasis is on building community and college identity in a culturally supportive environment.

Computer Science Transfer

The goal of this pathway is to recruit, support, and prepare California Community College students to successfully complete a degree in Computer Science (CS) at 缅北禁地.  Programming aims to facilitate transfer, help establish essential foundational skills, and create community and belonging for CS majors.

STEM Teaching

The goal of this pathway is to recruit, support, and prepare people with a passion for teaching STEM subjects to enter a STEM teaching career pipeline at 缅北禁地.  Future teachers can come from the student population (缅北禁地 and local community colleges), school district employees without their teaching credential, and the local community (career changers, return to work, etc). Programming aims to introduce people with a passion for teaching to the benefits of a teaching career, to build a strong community that supports teachers and teaching, and to ensure appropriate preparation for admission to accredited credential programs.

Internships

The goal of this pathway is to help undergraduate students develop their professional skills and materials (e.g. resumes, cover letters, interviewing skills, LinkedIn profiles, etc.) that are essential for obtaining paid internships relevant to their majors and career goals. Student participants are also provided with open opportunities to apply for specially designated internships, attend site visits, interact with industry professionals, and participate in other career-related activities to increase their awareness of various career paths.
