2023-2024 UHP Graduates

Jazlin Lee

My name is Jazlin, and I am a senior Sociology student. In my free time, I love to read, hike, and cook new recipes. My long-term career goal is to become a case manager for the state of California. Case managers are underrated key members of the social field that aid and support their communities. I joined UHP back in 2019 to make connections with other UHP students and network with faculty and staff outside of my major. Furthermore, UHP has provided me the opportunity to dive deeper and explore my passion in my major of Sociology.

Dana Fischel

I became a strong palliative care advocate while working as a paralegal in a probate litigation law firm. The HDEV classes and UHP program at CSUEB have reiterated that multiculturality is becoming an increasingly large reality for patients and their families. Therefore, mutual understanding of end-of-life decision-making by all involved in care for the patient is essential. Cultural literacy enhances the difficult conversation surrounding end-of-life care. My goal is to promote the integration of culturally sensible, sensitive language about palliative care in EOL decision-planning documents such as Health Care Directives.

Having completed the requirements for her Bachelors degree in human development, Fischel is pursuing graduate education in Gerotology.

Karrington Hendrix

My name is Karrington Hendrix, and I am a senior set to graduate with a B.S. in health science with a concentration in health policy. I chose to participate in the UHP Honors Program because I wanted to gain experience in research processes. I have aspirations to attend Graduate School, and the UHP program has played a pivotal role in preparing me for Graduate School through professional development and research experience. In my free time, I like to play the bass guitar and explore new food spots around the Bay Area.

Karrington was awarded a spot in the prestigious Panetta Congressional Internship Program in 2023-24. Read about her experience here.

Shane McCalib

First and foremost I consider myself a lifetime student. My hobbies include traveling, visiting museums, playing sports, and anything outdoors. Ultimately I plan on getting a PhD in Mathematics and doing research for a government lab such as Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and then eventually exploring a teaching career. Primarily I joined the UHP to get involved in research to help prepare myself for a role in a lab. I also wanted to be involved in a community of like-minded individuals who value education and work ethic.

Paulina Lara

I am a graduating senior majoring in Biology with a concentration in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. I am interested in wildlife conservation, focusing on protecting and restoring biodiversity. In my free time, I enjoy gardening, cooking, bird watching, and going on nature walks. In the UHP, I've worked on projects about sustainable agriculture and heterothermy in small mammals and birds. I chose to participate in the UHP to gain more experience conducting research projects.
